No way! Find your regions’ border collie rescue and get the best companion imaginable! That’s what we did, best dogs ever and cheap for only a $100 “donation”

Here’s one of my boys on a ride to the park to play frisbee golf.

What kind of pupper are you looking for?

You can have mine...

Kidding. Sort of. She’s not the dog I would’ve chosen but there were extenuating circumstances. So she gets to live her natural life and I patiently wait to get new floors. I've never actually picked out a pet, but car shopping sucked. Good luck!

I can vouch for Great Danes. They’re so goofy and loveable.

Growing up, every dog we had came to us either through a friend, a rescue, or a garage sale. We never went looking for a dog or even really wanted another at the time. I would keep an open mind and something will come into your life.

Just head to your local shelter and get a pittie. That’s what I did. They’re super cuddly and goofy and loving. Couldn't ask for a better dog.

I dunno. Early stages. I am... not a dog person. Would love a Newfoundland if one existed.

Go to the animal shelter. Look at all the cute doggies. Feel terrible that you are literally choosing which one of them to save from that terrible cinder block hell to bring home to your comfortable home with free (to the dog) food. Adopt all the doggies.

Go to the local shelters in your area. Start there. You’ll find a surprising number of pure breeds of every type. Or, you might find yourself falling in love with a mutt.

Whatever the dog’s pedigree, however, one thing you WILL be sure of with a shelter dog is that you will forever have their gratitude for rescuing them.

Go to a shelter. Save a life that deserves saving, and don’t support an industry that encourages the marked-up, for-profit sale of animals that are treated like factories.

I got my cat, Enzo, at a kill shelter and I haven’t regretted it a moment since (as you can tell by all the photos I post of him on here). He chose me. He really, really did. =^_^=

While I agree that they are awesome and have a mixed one, if you aren’t really a dog person, they probably aren’t the dog for you.

I’ve had 3 Newfie growing up. We were kinda a rescue house for them. (Friends had a kennel) LOVE the dogs. BUT-a big BUT—a Newfie over 6 years old is living on borrowed time. They have hip problems-big medical bills. You have to be able to take them swimming-you got a car you want to put a 160 lb wet dog in? You like drool? You like having hair everywhere?

Very lovable-they get along with everyone-I’d love to have another one. But the short lifespan+ medical issues have stopped me.

Big dogs are like 12 cylinder BMWs, lots of maintenance and need room to run. You got room?

Should be starred to the top. We have a Newf and absolutely love her. Having said that, they take a ton of time and work (when they lay down next to you though, it’s all worth it). We have to completely clean our house twice a week. She needs brushing at least once a week to keep the house cleaning under control. During the summer we all load up and go to the beach and it is awesome to see her go play in the waves. Don’t worry about having a big car for short trips, she basically fits in the mini. For longer trips, we take the truck. Just do research before you get one, and make sure this is the kind of life you want. We have no regrets and are considering another. I think they are the best dog!

Lovingly staring at my two as I type this. The twice a week vacuuming, slobbering and grooming are all very real. So is the love tho

We bought a dodge Caravan just to transport them. Bordered our large backyard with a vinyl fence just to contain them. Even then Dante (background) went through it after chasing a squirrel. Blasted right through like the Kool Aid man or that Hercules dog from the movie Sandlot.

Hah those screw-in-theground leash things didn’t work past 8 months old they could just uproot it. You also have to be mighty diligent with their training. A 150lb athletic dog playing and doing what you want is awesome. One not doing what you want, esp around other people or their shitty dogs can quickly lead to a lawsuit. We don’t go to the dog park anymore, too many crazy people with zero dog training and my lovely lady Starr (foreground) would straight up dismember another dog or human if she thought I was being threatened. On the bright side they would usually chase away any dogs picking on and stressing out the smaller ones at the park, then respectfully play with the small ones.

Their cuddle ability and wookie like vocabulary make it all very worth it, at least from our perspective. Unless you are very careful most large dogs will come with large medical bills, lawd knows we’ve had a couple. But I say again, nothing like the love from a big hairy Newf.

I might suggest going one size smaller like a great Pyraneese or a Bernie mtn dog or a greater suisse (swissy). On that tip you would do well to find a large breed rescue company as there are way too many people who find out they can’t support one

Their need for pretty regular playtime is one, and them being relatively hyper as well, at least compared to dogs like the Newfoundland.

Boring as it may be, I suggest a Lab. Yes, they are common but they are common for a reason. They are so sweet and very intelligent. There is still the cleaning issues but not nearly as bad as some dogs (like that Newfie). My Olive is 9 years old now. She’s had a couple tooth infections that required oral surgery but hasn’t had any health issues (yet) other than that. Nice thing about Labs is you can trust them with anyone; you don’t have to worry that they’ll go off of someone doing something stupid and leave you open to a potential lawsuit. That said, they alert well and have a serious sounding “big dog bark” that makes them as good an “organic burglar alarm” as any other.

True story, I bought a car in an afternoon and spent probably a month looking for my puppy. Patience pays off, but I think as long as you train well and love your dog there aren’t many bad options. Picture for reference:

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve had her for 5 days and she is amazing!

Also we did buy her from a breeder, but that’s because I really wanted a puppy and its hard to find “non-aggressive” breeds from shelters as puppies. I would love to have a pitbull rescue one day, but apartment landlords and shit...

Nothing would make me happier than to roll around on your floor while your dogs nosed me!

So what do I have now? A 135lb Great Pyr. (probably a Golden Pyr. rescue dog-unsure) Can’t say I can recommend the breed. “Fiercely independent + stubborn” is the first quote on the site for the breed. Newfies temperment -just want things its own way. .

She has been a fantastic dog. Oddly enough she was supposed to be a chiuwawa terrier mix and max out at about 12 pounds. 40 pounds later but couldn't ask for better.

Aaagh what an adorable marshmallow!!! I want to hug him. The first big dog I loved was my friends pure white Great Pyr out in Denver. That guy did not give one legitimate fuck, not one! Still a great loving dog.

Starr in the foreground is the princess who will play this obnoxious game of squealing , wiggling around on the floor and tapping her tail until I come over and give her rubs and repeat that like 5 times.

Dante the lover in the background will nose and lick the shit out of you any time but esp if he senses food on your person. The mailbox of a schnoz will come out of nowhere and push my hip out of the way to smell whatever’s on the kitchen counter
